Straight answers about how the helpline works, what it can help with and how to get the most from your first email. If your question is not here, write to us.
What is the Iran Legal Helpline?
It is a first point of contact for anyone with a legal question connected to Iran. You describe your issue by email, we make sure we understand it, and we direct you to the right help, whether that is practical information, a next step you can take yourself, or a lawyer who handles your type of matter.
Can I ask an Iranian lawyer a question in English?
Yes. The helpline works in English, so you can write in your own words without translating your situation into legal language first.
Do I need to be in Iran to get legal help?
No. Many of the people who contact us live abroad and need help with a business, property, family or document matter in Iran. Much of the preparation can be handled remotely, and where someone needs to act for you locally we can explain how that is usually arranged.
Is my message confidential?
Yes. What you tell us is treated in confidence and used only to understand your matter and direct you to appropriate help.
What if my matter is urgent?
Say so clearly in the subject line and include any deadlines or hearing dates in the first lines of your message. We respond promptly, and urgent matters are reviewed first.
Is contacting the helpline the same as hiring a lawyer?
No. Writing to the helpline does not by itself create a lawyer-client relationship. If your matter needs formal advice or representation, the terms of that engagement are agreed separately and in writing before work begins.
What should I include in my first email?
A brief account of what happened, where, who is involved, the documents you hold, any deadlines and the outcome you want. If you are unsure, send what you have; we will ask for anything else we need.
Can you help companies as well as individuals?
Yes. We hear from businesses with contract, debt, registration and intellectual property questions as well as from individuals with family, property and document matters.
Can someone act for me in Iran while I am abroad?
In many matters a person abroad can authorise a lawyer or a trusted individual to act for them in Iran through a power of attorney. The right form depends on the task, so tell us what needs to be done and we will explain the usual route.
Which areas of law can you help with?
Common topics include business and company matters, unpaid debts, property, family and inheritance, documents and powers of attorney, intellectual property and employment. If your question falls outside these, ask anyway.
Can I send documents with my email?
Yes. Attach copies of the key papers, or list them if they are large. Please do not send originals by post unless you are asked to.
